About
Built by practitioners who've shipped in regulated environments.
Aegis Studios isn't a thesis looking for validation. It's an operating model born from the reality that AI in regulated industries fails at governance, not at inference.
Founder
James Waddell
Founder & Managing Partner
James founded Aegis Studios on a thesis built from operating experience: AI governance is not a compliance checkbox. It's the product architecture decision that determines whether an AI system ships in a regulated environment or stalls in legal review.
His background spans commercial real estate technology, workforce analytics, and AI governance research. He's spoken at IFMA, CoreNet Global, and CREtech on the intersection of AI governance and operational technology in the built environment.
The Cognitive research stack -- Building Constitution, Building AI Governance Index (BAGI), Human-in-the-Loop Maturity Model (HMM), AI Governance Readiness Framework (AGRF), Governance Assessment & Transition Engine (GATE), and AI Incident Response Score (AIRS) -- was developed under his direction as the governance framework architecture that every Aegis portco operationalizes.
The Studio Model
Venture studio, not venture fund.
Aegis Studios builds companies from thesis to operating entity. This is not a fund that writes checks and waits for returns. It's a studio that identifies governance gaps in regulated industries, builds the products that fill them, and operates alongside founding teams through regulatory complexity.
Every portco in the Aegis portfolio shares governance infrastructure: the Cognitive research stack, regulatory intelligence from RegWatch and BECW, and the governance-first operating model that makes compliance a product feature rather than a product tax.
